April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Today our agency hosted awareness events in two communities in our service area.  This evening I participated in one of the events being held at Central Park in Clear Lake.  The event is called “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes.”  The purpose of the event is to draw men’s attention to the issues of Sexual Violence Prevention.

Men from the community participate in the event by first ‘shopping’ for a pair of women’s shoes that they will be wearing.

Black Pumps or Fuchsia?

What awareness event is complete without signs?

A moment to greet the children.

Then the men lined up with signs in hand and walked parade-style across the sidewalk and around the park at 5:00 p.m..

When they returned to the bandshell area they all had tender toes.

But they were proud to walk in honor of the women in their lives.

1 in 4 women will be the victim of sexual violence at some point in her lifetime.

  1. I’ve seen a picture in the newspaper of some very overweight men resting on a bench during that “Walk a mile in her shoes” event. Never knew high heels could carry so much weight. I wonder if it really changes something, if it really sets people thinking. In the end it may become a fun day out with the pals, dressed up a little , just the way one diguises on Mardi Gras. But stilll it’s better than doing nothing.
